From some research, I was unable to find anything on the history of this brand. They are marked, on the insole: John McVey, Shoes for Men, Distinctively Different. " The sole is also inscribed with the following: "Leather Lined Throughout. From a careful examination of this shoe's build, their quality is readily apparent. They feature a rich, heavy, and especially glassy, burgundy shell cordovan upper, a unique (and telling of the style of the times) apron toe/Norwegian hybrid style derby design, leather lining (appears to be a calfskin, similar to many used in Alden's), leather insole, leather midsole, leather outsole, and a Goodyear welt (high density, with even spacing on the top-facing leather welt). These shoes are easily on par with or more impressive than vintage Florsheim imperials, Hanover shells, or modern day Allen Edmonds or Alden's. Their build reminds me the most of my Alden wingtips.
Based on their styling and build features, I estimate these shoes to be made sometime in the 1940s or 1950s. They are in superb condition for their age; the one noticeable flaw being some cracking in the fabric piping around the top of the shoes (this thankfully is not part of the shell - actually appears to be some type of rounded and covered fabric - so it's wear and tear will not affect the condition of the shell, and during a rebuild of the shoe, could likely be replaced) (see pictures). Otherwise, the uppers are in fantastic condition, the soles still have a tremendous amount of life in them, and the insoles do not have widespread cracking - often a given in shoes of this age, with even modest wear.I have cleaned, conditioned, and shined these shoes with Saphir and Allen Edmonds products, specially formulated for shell cordovan shoes. I urge the future owner to use similar ones (especially Saphir Renovateur) as it works wonders for this leather. Shoe trees (split-toe, all cedar) are included! They will help to preserve the integrity of the shoes and limit accumulating deleterious moisture, with regular use, after wear. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
