The thin fabric label this jacket had, probably sewn to the inside of one of the pockets, is gone: we were not able to find any label or stamping on this piece. We therefore can't tell the original size, so please check the following measurements carefully and make sure this fits you or your loved one: 23" pit to pit across the chest; 26" from shoulder seam to edge of cuff; 18" from underarm seam to edge of cuff; 18" shoulder to shoulder across the front of the jacket; 34 from collar seam to hem along the back. From the measurement of the shoulders, we are guessing this is a jacket would fit a man size medium, but please we suggest strongly you make sure yourself. This mackinaw coat was issued for the first time to the US Army in 1938 or a bit later, and it has been called M-1938 or M1938.

We are not sure if that is the "official" US Army designation. It is also known as Jeep Coat as it has 3/4 length that is appropriate for wear while driving a car, or a jeep, of course. It is possible the jacket was later replaced by the Parsons, or M-1941 or M-41, but we are not sure. The M1938 was in use by the Army at the beginning of Second World War, is our understanding, so this piece here is about 70 years old.

It is in good condition for its age, with only minor flaws on the outside, and a repairable situation on the lining (it will need some patching up with same color wool swatches). By the way, pic # that shows stains on the lower left side and the left side cuff, you see also how the belt is lined with wool, as the jacket is. That wool lining on the bed is in very good condition, no moth bites or holes or stains. Of course, it is not visible when the belt is in use. There are two doughnut or "dunot" buttons for the chin strap, check close-up # 4.
